The story so far….

On the 22nd October 2013 cymru1900wales.org was launched, and we really didn’t know what to expect.  Now nearly two months later we have received over 150,000 transcriptions from 264 volunteers – a fantastically high number of place names transcribed by a relatively low number of online volunteers.

The experience for some, particularly those that have contributed many thousands of place names, has been frustrating at times – particularly when places they had previously marked no longer appeared on the map(!).

However, we have been working with the developers at Zooniverse to try and improve the user experience for all contributors, and we now think the corner has most definitely been turned in terms of website stability and user experience.

We have established this blog to celebrate the achievements of our volunteers, highlight interesting localities, and explore some of the stories behind the place names and sites that you, our volunteers, are recording.

Most of all we want to thank you, the volunteers, for all your efforts in helping us in our goal of developing the most detailed historic place name gazetteer of Wales available, a resource which will underpin place name research in Wales for many years to come.
